J Street U Summer Leadership Institute – May 27-31, 2010
Want to strengthen your organizing skills? Meet J Street U activists from all over the country? Strategize about the future of our student movement? Participate in J Street U’s first ever board elections?
Join J Street U for our first ever Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) at the Pearlstone Retreat Center just outside of Baltimore from Thursday, May 27th through Monday May 31st. This opportunity is intended for students who are, or wish to become, active J Street U leaders. Don’t miss your chance for 4 days and 4 nights of training, networking and fun! This opportunity has been heavily subsidized so there is no registration fee.
Participants will have the chance to:
- Learn the skills necessary to strengthen the J Street U presence on their campus
- Participate in creative and innovative trainings
- Discuss the future of J Street U with fellow activists from across the country
- Vote for J Street U’s next student board
- Have fun with the J Street U activist community!
The application deadline is April 21st. April 28th. Space is limited so apply early!
How to Apply
Fill out the J Street U Summer Leadership Institute registration form.
Travel scholarships are available for those who choose the cheapest possible travel option. Participants must indicate that they are requesting a travel scholarship on the application form and submit a receipt to studentregistration@jstreetu.org in order to receive funding.
We will determine travel funding based on where participants are traveling from. In order to receive travel funding for significant portions of travel costs, participants should choose the cheapest reasonable travel option from their original location (ie: Participants traveling from NYC should plan to bus to Baltimore. Participants who need to fly should search all airlines). No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
Once accepted, participants will be asked to submit their credit card information in order to hold their spot. Participants will only be charged if they cancel after April 21st for any reason or do not show up to the conference.
Registration for specific trainings and workshops is on a first come first serve basis. The sooner you register, the better your chances of getting into your first workshop choice.
Logistical Information
The SLI has been heavily subsidized and there is no registration fee. However all SLI participants must make a commitment to be actively involved with J Street U on campus during the 2010-2011 school year. In addition, if participants cancel after April 21st or register and do not attend, we will charge their credit card $360.
All meals and housing will be provided by the retreat center. The retreat center is glatt kosher and we will offer activities that respect various levels of Shabbat observance.
Participants should book their travel AFTER being accepted to the SLI. Please plan to arrive in Baltimore no later than 6 PM on Thursday evening, and arrange to depart no earlier than 2 PM on Monday. J Street U will arrange travel to and from the retreat center itself from BWI (flights and trains) and Travel Plaza (bus)*. Please be sure to book travel that arrives to one of these two locations. More detailed information about pickup times and exact locations will be sent out closer to the SLI.
*Please be sure to take a bus that arrives at the Baltimore Travel Plaza. Some suggestions include Go To Bus, Greyhound, and most Chinatown bus companies.
