What We Believe

Core Principle

J Street U supports Israel as a democratic home for the Jewish people, the full and equal rights of Arab and other non-Jewish citizens of Israel and the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own.

Statement of Principles

J Street U is a student driven network of activists who educate and advocate for peace, security and social justice in the State of Israel and in the future state of Palestine.

J Street U Supports:

  • Consistent and concerted diplomatic engagement by the United States to achieve a comprehensive Israeli-Arab peace. A negotiated end to the Israeli-Arab and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts serves both U.S. and Israeli strategic and security interests. Achieving it must be a priority for the current U.S. administration;
  • An enduring relationship between the US and Israel that promotes their common interests;
  • Israel’s right to exist as a homeland for the Jewish people, a democratic state, and a sovereign nation with the right to defend itself against external threats;
  • Those working within Israel to safeguard equal rights for all its citizens;
  • The creation of a viable Palestinian state alongside Israel as part of a negotiated two-state solution. A Palestinian state should be roughly based on the 1967 borders, with land swaps to be agreed upon by the two parties. A viable and stable Palestinian state will require significant and sustained levels of international economic and political support to succeed, including funding to settle Palestinian refugees within the new Palestinian state and current host countries;
  • A negotiated solution to Jerusalem in which different areas of the city will serve as the capitals of the state of Israel and the future state of Palestine;
  • A comprehensive regional peace that builds on the Arab Initiative, leading to recognition of Israel by all its neighbors in the Middle East and the creation of a new regional approach to cooperation and security;
  • An American policy in the Middle East that consistently prioritizes diplomacy and multilateralism. An American policy in the Middle East that consistently prioritizes diplomacy and multilateralism.

To advance these goals, we seek to build a broad and inclusive student driven movement that crosses ethnic and religious lines and in which American Jews play a prominent role.

We believe honest discussion of American, Israeli, and Palestinian policies is healthy for students, for the U.S., and for the Middle East. We will actively promote debate on campus that is as open and spirited as it is in Israel.
